One wild September morning a ship was wrecked upon the rocks, and Grace heard the cries of the drowning through the wind and waves. Though the sea was fierce, she begged her father to help, and together they pushed out their heavy boat into the storm. Rowing through the towering waves, they reached the wreck and brought the survivors safely to the lighthouse. Grace nursed them tenderly, and her brave deed was long remembered.

In the last chapter, George Washington and His Hatchet, a small boy was given a shiny new hatchet and tried it on everything he could find. Out in the garden he chopped at his father’s prized cherry tree and hurt it badly. When his father angrily asked who had done it, George could not tell a lie and bravely confessed. His father, valuing honesty far above the tree, forgave him gladly and was proud of his truthful son. It was a lesson in the courage of telling the truth.
