Questions

What is The Listening Grove?

The Listening Grove is the audio home of Kindred Thicket lessons. Each book sits on a simple page that combines the audiobook and its Charlotte Mason lesson, read aloud in our updated Revised and Enhanced Editions, with the errors corrected or noted and the beauty of the original kept. You press play and listen together, free, with a Lesson Guide that carries the rest of the lesson, the maps, copywork, and notes, prepared for you. The Grove grows as each title is prepared. For the car or bedtime, free Kindred Thicket playlists compatible with the Yoto app are available now in Read Mode and Lesson Mode.

How is The Listening Grove different from your YouTube read-alouds?

On YouTube you watch the read-aloud, with the words and the pictures on the screen. In The Listening Grove you listen: it is the audiobook on a page, with the Charlotte Mason lesson rather than a full video to watch. The Grove is for listening rather than watching, the same updated Kindred Thicket edition, Revised or Enhanced, and a coming Yoto version lets you take it anywhere.

Is The Listening Grove free?

The audiobooks are free, the same as our read-aloud videos on YouTube. The companion guides, with every part of the lesson prepared in print, are the paid pieces, and a link to the matching one sits on each book’s page. Two free ways to use Kindred Thicket, the read-aloud videos and the Grove, and one paid companion for those who want it.

What is the difference between a Revised Edition and an Enhanced Edition audiobook?

A Kindred Thicket Revised Edition means we updated the text itself and recorded it, so the reading you hear is already corrected. A Kindred Thicket Enhanced Edition means you hear the original book read aloud, and wherever the science or history is out of date, you’ll find the correction in the Teacher’s Notes with the audio. Both are the updated version.

Can we listen in the car or at bedtime?

In the Grove you press play on a page, with the lesson. For listening away from the page, a free Kindred Thicket playlist compatible with the Yoto app is available now in Read Mode and Lesson Mode, so the same narration can travel to the car or to bedtime on your Yoto.

Will this work for a pre-reader, a reluctant reader, or a child with dyslexia?

Yes. A child can take in the whole living book by ear and narrate beautifully, whether or not she is reading fluently yet. The reading is carried for her, with the lesson, so the book is open to every child at the table.

Do I need to prepare anything before I press play? Is it open and go?

No prep on your end. These are open-and-go lessons. The Charlotte Mason lesson sits with the audio, so you press play and listen together.

Will it work if I have several ages, or a baby?

Yes. One reading serves the whole gathering, and each child narrates in her own way, whether she is five or thirteen.

Which books are in The Listening Grove?

The Grove grows as we produce. It spans living books across history, nature study, and literature, including the updated editions families ask for most. New titles are added as they are recorded.
