N.C. Wyeth: Picture Study Companion

N.C. Wyeth, the great American illustrator behind the most beloved editions of Treasure Island, Robin Hood, and The Last of the Mohicans, is a wonderful artist to know. Kindred Thicket guides your family through a term of picture study (artist study) with him, the Charlotte Mason way: not making art, but learning to truly see it.

There are three parts, two of them free: the free video lessons, the free shared discussion cards, and the per-artist companion booklet that prepares the whole term of study for you.

What it is

Picture study is learning to look at great art and to truly know it. You spend time with one painting by a master, look at it long and closely, then tell back what you saw, the way you would narrate a story. Over a term you follow one artist’s life and work, and your child builds a gallery of paintings in her mind that stays with her for years.

How a lesson works

No preparation. The video carries the whole lesson for you, in order: a short opening to meet the artist and a moment from the artist’s life to mark on a map, time to look at one painting closely in silence, a chance to narrate what you saw, a memory sketch to see what your child’s mind kept, and one art word to grow her eye for looking. You press play and look together.
