Birds of the Air

Arabella B. Buckley (1840 to 1929) was an English science writer who worked for years as secretary to the geologist Sir Charles Lyell, then wrote a series of much-loved nature books for children. She writes the way Charlotte Mason hoped a child would first meet the natural world, with wonder and close attention, telling the life of a creature as a story before any naming or sorting.

Eyes and No Eyes is Buckley's series of first nature readers, named for the old idea that two children can walk the same lane and one comes home having seen everything while the other saw nothing. The books teach a child to be the one with eyes. Birds of the Air is the volume on birds, a gentle, story-first study of the birds of field, garden, and hedgerow.

An Enhanced Edition means you hear the original book read aloud, unchanged, and wherever the science or an old bird name is out of date, you find the correction in the Teacher's Notes with the audio, so what your child learns matches what naturalists know today. It is different from a Revised Edition, where we update the text itself before recording. Both are the updated version; the Enhanced Edition simply keeps the original words and adds the notes.

Birds of the Air was written in the 1890s, and like most older nature books it carries a few facts and bird names that have since moved on. We checked every chapter against modern ornithology, the BTO, the RSPB, and the British Ornithologists' Union List, and most of Buckley's account holds up beautifully. Where it does not, the correction is right there in the Teacher's Notes, and the full accuracy review sits at the foot of each chapter page.
